Zoey is a "commoner" who was able to get in into the prestigious Ellison University through a dance scholarship. But the school is being ran by spoiled, rich guys who call themselves as F4. It's an American series inspired by the Japanese manga, "Hana Yori Dango". This review has been sitting on my drafts ever since the show was placed on hiatus last February. I think it's safe to blog about this now since there's been news of rebooting the series.

I really cringed during the first episode. It feels like a school project taken with a single camera. But after a while I got used to the cheesy acting of some characters, the low-quality audio and terrible shots and editing..everything! But still there were a lot of glaring inconsistencies like continuity in costumes like wearing the same clothes after a few months and magically growing bra straps in the next scene. And there were also unbelievable things they think can get away with like slippery floors and talking with your sister who sounds like she's on the same room. I really think Liam's hairdresser and the douchebag in the club are the same person. But I was willing to overlook on the poor overall production because it still managed to stay fun and interesting. But what really turned me off is the drama behind the drama. They changed the main actress four times and the main actor twice in the span of just six episodes. There were press releases and a sit-down from the producer and cast where they have to explain. It also didn't help that the planned 16-episode series seems really ambitious and with crowdfunding it make it seems fishy.

Starting from scratch would be the best way to go. By now they would have already learned a lot from  their past experiences and hopefully they'll have a more solid casting. I liked the playboy Chase and the airhead Jessica. Too bad the actress has been dropped and including Piper too. I love the second Liam since he looks younger. The first Liam is a great actor but he seems too Christian Grey-ish for me. But as for Zoey, I can't seem to find Makino in them. Yes, they don't have a license from HYD and it's just inspired but the personalities of the girls are so different from each other. The first girl was too tough, the second was a bit haughty while the third girl was too sweet. Oliver is also underutilized in the series. They should use him more. The only thing I'm really impressed with in the series is that it has a decent soundtrack particularly the main theme by Wordsmith and the ballad by the girl. (Sorry I don't have the details of the song.) It would very hard to pull off a very convincing rich lifestyle on a very limited budget. But since they already started it might as well make it more professionally done. I'm still looking forward for the series to continue. And not waiting for subtitles is a perk too since it's already in English! Oh and  also on a side note, I followed Joseph Almani, the first Liam, in twitter and he followed me back. It's a first time for me to have one of the casts to follow me back. But after he was off the show, I tweeted him:

Event: Jenny Han In the Philippines

I've mentioned in my book review of "To All The Boys I've Loved Before" that the author, Jenny Han, will be coming in the Philippines this June. I was really halfhearted about it. Take for example when Kim Hyun Joong and Lee Min Ho came into our country. I could buy the tickets or make extra effort to attend the free meet and greet but I didn't. F4 and Jerry Yan went several times in our country and yep still no show for me. This time I decided to go since I won museum tickets which is near to the event location and it's about to expire on the 29th. So it was hitting two birds in one stone.

I was with my youngest son and when we got to the mall during opening time. I noticed the activity area was suspiciously empty. Then we spent the morning in the nearby museum. Before we took our lunch I found out that the event will actually happen inside the bookstore. I checked the place and there were already people seated on the chairs and on the floor. Majority of the crowd were girls. So we ate out and got back an hour before the event.

I remembered on the FAQS that you can bring your copy or buy the book on the event itself. I was planning on buying the book on the day itself as I don't have a physical copy yet. But as I scanned the displays all the books are there except for that book I specifically came for. I asked for help from the customer service and it was indeed already out of stock. I was panicking. So we walked passed through two malls to get into another bookstore and found out it's also out of stock. I even asked the girl to call the other nearby bookstore if they still have a copy and still a negative. My last hope was the non-affiliated bookstore and it was still a fail.

We got back in the event and the small space was already packed. There goes my hopes of rubbing shoulders with the author. I didn't bought the other titles as I'm not about to make an emotional purchase. I'm just not ready to commit myself to read another trilogy with my current reverse harem backlog.

So I stood there for like almost an hour and waited for it to start. My son was busily playing the ipad on the floor. I enviously eyed the girls in their TATBILB paperbacks. It was like highschool all over again.  Girls were squealing when they see their girlfriends. Amidst all the group of girls, there was this one girl giving her cute boyfriend a smack on the lips. Then a group of tough looking girls in TATBILB  shirts came in. Yes with the same cursive font of the book. (I want that shirt!) Then a nerdy girl was passing flyers and she's with little Miss Perfect in her flower crowns. Oh yeah, they're both wearing customized Jenny Han shirts. There was also this girl who came in late and casually squeezes in the middle of the the crowd while the smaller girl at the back shoots daggers from her eyes. Everyone was cool except for me whose as busy as a wallflower with the rest of the adults.

It started 30 minutes late. When Jenny Han arrived the girls pushed to the front and I got myself  in the sidelines. There was an interview first and the audio was pretty bad in my place and I couldn't hear half of it. But the most important part was that she had officially closed the reverse harem deal. There's going to be the third guy on the sequel, "P.S. I Still love You". She also mentioned that this was based on her real life experience of writing letters to her crushes and Kitty was also based on her sister. That's what I can remember for now. The rest of the interview was about the other books. Sorry I'm the worst person to blog an event ever! But some interesting things that were unforgettable:

1. She worked on a bookstore before that was used in the movie, "You've Got Mail". I loved that movie. I can still remember the kid spelling out, F-O-X. I also have this dream of either a. working on a bookstore and b. opening a small, quaint bookstore/cafe.
2. During the Q & A , one the fans asked about her first love since she's fond of writing about first loves. There was a shy, awkward expression from Jenny. She still thinks about him...in his highschool form but no she left out the name.
3. There was also a game where Jenny asked for the names of the five guys from TATBILB and my mind went blank! Shame on me!

Jenny (yes we're on first name basis ya know) seems very intimidating in her pictures but in real life she's so sweet and very warm. I literally feel like she's an older sister to her fans. I laughed on how she tweeted earlier that day that she giving out virtual hot cocoa to all the fans lined up outside. And her sister told her like why are you giving out hot cocoa in this weather which is true since we're a tropical country. Then Jenny retorted that it was like thematic cocoa just like in TATBILB. Please correct me if there's some special significance about cocoa in her other books. These friendly banters are as real as the Song sisters. So cute!

She was also giving out advanced copies of her Ashes to Ashes book and TATBILB notebooks as prizes. She also gave copies to the early birds who came a day before at 11 pm! As I was situated near the entrance, a lot of adults were asking the security guard of how long does the book signing usually takes and the guard answers them helpfully as if it's the first time he hears the questions. It may take to a maximum of four hours and it depends on how slow or how fast the writer signs the books. I also realized that a lot of the adult came to chaperone their kids. Me on the other hand, I was the adult who came with her kid who's acting as her chaperone. Lol. Also another realization, even if I have miraculously purchased a book from a different bookstore, I didn't register to get my number for the book signing. /Facepalm.

Even though my plans were a total disaster. It was a  whole new experience for me that I got to enjoy. I t makes me wish to be young again. I want to be like this young girls who read books, blogs about books, attend book signing, blogs about book signings...Well my time has passed but I'll always have a memory of me of as a young girl who dreams of first love while reading Sweet Valley High and Sweet Dream and rolling in her bed on a Saturday morning. And several years later I got to marry my first love. :)

If an opportunity presents itself again in the future I'd love to take it again.  Here are some pointers of things to remember when attending a book event. Well this is more for my personal reference if in case I get amnesia and forget this ordeal.

1. Re-read the details before leaving your house. It said inside the bookstore and not in the activity center. Registration started at 10 am and I was already there but prancing around somewhere else.
2. Do not buy the book on the event itself. I repeat do not buy the book on the event itself.
3. Come early to get a lead in the queue and a good spot for taking pictures and enjoying the show.
4. Have a very patient companion who can take your spot while you take your turns in the bathroom or in buying food.
5. It's going to be a long and tiring day. It will take the whole day if you're that dedicated. So dress comfortably, carb up and get caffeinated! Bring books or cards or what-have-you to pass the time.
6. Take notes or better yet record the whole event. Make sure you got your cameras, powerbank, batteries, memory card, back up cameras etc.

This happened last June 21 at Makati City. Jenny Han had another tour in Cebu City a day after. I don't have decent pictures but you can check the official pictures from National Bookstore. But if you really insist here's a picture of me outside the bookstore and my ambush shot of Jenny Han after the jump. Hurray for my first ever reverse harem-related event!!!

Book Review: Falling for Sakura Book # 1

Falling for Sakura Book # 1 by Alexia Praks

Sakura is a Japanese-American girl that was adopted by the very rich Princeton family. As children she was bullied by her stepsisters while all her seven stepbrothers were indifferent to her. Several years later, Sakura now 23, gets to meet her siblings again in a long, overdue reunion. Warning! This is intended for older audience.

One of the blog readers, Frizzy, suggested this story from Wattpad. I checked the author's website and there was a form for reviewing the book. So I entered my info and the author contacted me through email and voila I got myself a free copy. This is my first time to ask for a copy in exchange for review. And just like the time I was given a free copy, I was again nervous of what if I don't like it. It was me who asked for it and not the other way around.

There's a character sheet list with descriptions of their ages, hair color and eyes, personalities etc. It's a good reference since there's a lot of stepbrothers. I liked the fact that she used the same family shades of colors for the eyes. Some got silvery-gray eyes like the dad's while others got varying shades of blue like the mom's. I wished the hair color were also restricted to blondes and blacks just like their parents for uniformity sake. Unlike in Japanese mangas and animes, they can get away with the multicolored eyes and hair. I'm sorry I'm really nitpicky with colors. As a kid I used to list down all the weird color names I encounter in books. If I'll have daughters I'll be naming them after colors.

The story is written in multiple POV. It's the first time I get to read this kind of format. It's unconventional but it works. You get to see the real time insights of what they're all thinking at the same exact moment. It gives off a feeling of fast paced without being rushed. I also liked the fact that the reverse harem element feels like a naturally-occurring phenomenon. That's just me maybe those who are totally new with reverse harem may find it otherwise.

The story reminds me of "Mills and Boon" and "Harlequin" pocketbooks given the reverse harem treatment. For the younger generation, it's like the "Fifty Shades of Grey" of our time. But this is actually under new adult genre. It's steamy and such a tease! I think at one point I got carried away with one of the smexy situations. There's also drama but not the overbearing kind of drama.

The characters are also patterned after Snow White but in this case seven Princes. I loved that Sakura or Snow has grown into confident and feisty woman. It also works that it's a love triangle within a reverse harem but still it makes me curious of how the rest of the brothers will fare in the second and third books. Yes, it's going to be a trilogy. I think I'm drawn to Sebastian but all the brothers are equally hot! Sakura's dog, Toby, reminds me of Julie the squirrel in Brothers Conflict. But he's the exact opposite of Julie. Lol.

The reverse harem take on the modern romance novels is a winning combination that I didn't expect. The strong willed girl is a breath of fresh air among the pushover heroines in reverse harem. While the multitude of men is also a breath of fresh air among the formulaic standard romance novels. I scored it 4 out of 5 stars in Goodreads. I think the world is not yet ready with reverse harem but as reverse harem I'm giving it high marks for enjoyability.

I filed this under OEL which means Original English Language. It refers to mangas and graphic novels published in English. But I decided to tag English novels and TV series under this label for easy reference in this site. Maybe I'll add other stuff such as English otome in the future.

Shoujo manga "Strobe Edge" will be adapted into a live action film. From ANN. First "Akatsuki no Yona", now "Strobe Edge"! More shoujo manga adaptations please! I agree with the comments in the news that we kind of wish it's an anime instead of live action.

"Youth Over Flowers" has another second group to also fly out of the country and guess what it's the flower boys of "Reply 1994!" Grabage oppa is busy with other commitments so he wasn't able to join. So what do we call this reverse harem spinoff meets ex-reverse harem flower boys? From dramabeans.

The premiere of  "The Record of Night Watchman" will be moved to August 4 as the kdrama "Triangle" on its' timeslot will be extended for two more episodes. From dramabeans. Aww that's sad, I'm already excited to watch this.

Anime Review: Kamigami no Asobi

Kamigami no Asobi Ludere Deorum- 12 episodes

Yui Kasunagi is transported to a mysterious garden together with gods from different mythologies. There's the Greek Gods: Hades, Dionysius and Apollon, Japanese Gods: Takeru and Tsukito, Norse Gods: Loki, Balder and Thor and oh yeah an Egyptian teacher, Thoth. The gods are tasked to get closer to humanity through interaction with their human classmate, Yui.

I loved the premise of teaming up different gods from different mythologies. I'm really into Greek and Roman mythologies back in college. I also loved the fact that my nickname, Iris, is a Greek goddess of the rainbow. But sadly the plot didn't offer much. It did succeeded though in providing eye candy-- handsome and scantily clad gods and colorful animation -- and funny school misadventures. I thought featuring one or two half-naked god/s were going to be the standard fare but it stopped after fourth or fifth episode.

The anime also reminded mo of a lot of previous reverse harem shows. There's the Ouran floral character intro cards. The Heart no Kuni no Alice faceless students. And of course, who would miss the Brothers Conflict idol-style ending song.

The character designs of the gods are all very, very attractive and their god forms are sigh-inducing except for Loki's. It doesn't look flattering at all. But that's not the worst. Could I just say that for the record, Melissa is the ugliest mascot/sidekick ever. I'm sorry Melissa! I could say though that this is the first time I've seen a magical boy transformation Apollon-style.

It's good that the gods have personalities to match their pretty faces. I also liked the fact that they're not fighting unreasonably over Yui. But I wonder if some of the characters will have a more intimate connections with her in the otome. If we're just going to talk about appearances, I think Thoth is really, really hot! But surprisingly my heart goes for Takeru. I don't like short guys, but his sweet side won me over. Aww!

Is it just me but I have this feeling of being claustrophobic. You know being locked up in a garden with faceless classmates and with just them for company for the entire school year. And sorry for being spoilerish there's no villains either. But then again if you're going to be cooped up with those bishie gods it's okay I guess. Oh wait...I just realized that it is literally a reverse harem garden. Get it? A reverse harem in a garden. Love it!

I liked how it ended. Nothing extravagant, just them looking all so adorable. In a nutshell, it's all style no substance but still delightful to watch.

Mushroom College by Shiu Wan - 4 volumes

It's the start of classes again at Mushroom College and handsome guys popped into Lin's life. But she must not get sidetracked as she had already set her eyes on to her idol. Sigh! Only two chapters are available and hasn't been picked up for a long time. I noticed that the art style from its' time (eight years ago) is similar with other mangas of the same timeline. Do you still see styles like this at the present time? I find the cat eyes distracting and I also like the cute mushroom club names. This really got me wondering of what will happen with the guys.

This is a Chinese comics or manhua and not to be confused with Korean comics or manhwa. And I only learned the difference just now. I didn't notice the difference in the spelling and meaning before.

Poll: Which reviews do you prefer most?

$

I think there was a glitch with blogger because I only saw the votes after about a week or two. I was a bit sad because I thought no one was voting! The major chunk went to animes with 414 votes (71%) and followed by mangas with 210 votes (36%) and otomes with 115 votes (19%). The bottom half went to: all of the above 102 (17%), dramas 58 (10%) and books  44 (7%). I promise to post a minimum of two animes or two mangas or a combination of two before I post a book or drama reviews. Deal? I love animes and mangas but I also love watching dramas and reading books so I'll have to squeeze it in between for variety and for my sanity. But unfortunately otomes are not my priority right now since there's already a lot of great blogs dedicated to it and it will be counterproductive to my plan of prioritizing animes and mangas. But who knows I might post every once in a while. Thanks to all you 582 peeps who have voted! Your wish is my command!

Anime Review: La Corda d'Oro Blue Sky

La Corda d'Oro Blue Sky - 12 episodes

Koihanata Kanade was invited to Seiso Academy to compete for the national musical competition wherein they have to pit against the cream of the crop of other schools. She was once a child prodigy in playing the violin but she has reached a somewhat of a slump.

I was excited with the number of bishonen and different schools. There are four schools and fifteen bishies but the opening credits showed twelve main boys. Who wouldn't be excited? Out of all the Neoromance anime adaptations, the only project that I really liked is La Corda d' Oro. So I was feeling positive about the spinoff. There was also a reverse harem cohabitation within the reverse harem interschool competition.  Inception! Yes, there was a female photographer in the house and all-girl team but I liked to pretend that they don't count.

But after just a couple of episodes, I have quickly accepted the fact that it's going to be yet another boring Neoromance anime. It was trying too hard to be very dramatic which made it too serious. And couple it with the fact that it has the worst animation I've seen recently. You can literally see the outline of the drawings and they look distorted at times. With these factors it just makes me hate everything that I would normally be relaxed about. We all know that eventually she'll win but I was expecting some exciting twists for each levels of the competition. But no, it was plain compete and win and repeat. Even the typical exaggerated scenes in animes during battles looked cheesy. I'm not sure if the same plot worked for the manga and the otome versions, (I haven't read and played it) but the ending left me wondering is that it? All the dragging episodes just for that ending.

Spinoffs usually have this character templates but maybe because of my frustration on the show they all looked pale, recycled bishonens. The only character who caught my attention for a second was Ritsu Kisaragi. It was when he took off his glasses looking vulnerable. That's it. The only silver linings are of course the music and the cameo crossovers of the characters from the original series.

I was expecting for the franchise to take it on the next level since it's the nationals we're talking about. They're going to compete with the best of the best. Sadly it has the lost the charm of the original title. Thank kamisama for Kamigami no Asobi or it would have been a horrendous spring.

Book Review: The Ghost Bird Series Book # 6: Push and Shove

Book #6 The Ghost Bird Series ~ Push and Shove by C. L. Stone

The Academy boys face the aftereffects of new synthetic drugs spreading in the school. They also have to deal with Nathan's abusive dad who has returned home. And on top of all the pressing issues they're facing with, it has now become obvious to Sang that the Academy has not allowed the boys to kiss her...on the lips.

This is for mature audience only. It has veered from young adult to new adult. Heck the previous books should be off limits to younger audience 'kay? I think I should create smut ratings but coming up with descriptions is making me stressed. Maybe later! Hah! Anyway read more after the jump since some are spoilers if you haven't read the series.

Picking up the sixth installment brought me to nostalgia of skeptical me when I first started reading the series. I roll my eyes on Sang's nose for their individual scents. It's like she's perfumer or something. But later on I realized that it is actually a very useful talent. And I don't get Victor's fiery eyes. Everytime Sang stares at Victor, she kept on going on about his fiery eyes. I can't imagine someone on fiery eyes mode on all the time. There's a lot more but I can't remember them all for now. I'm also amazed again on how everything tidily fits to an impossibly perfect reverse harem world.  But as I read further, I have succumbed again to my guilty pleasure. You know that with all logic and reason in the world it's not supposed to be okay but I still jump blindly without care.

The fanservice went up a notch steamier. Personally, I think some of it are not so doable in real life. :P But at the same time her relationships with the boys have become more complicated. Their actions now have serious consequences. I noticed though the Sang comes back to reality of asking the hard questions conveniently happen after all the fun parts have been done. And when I meant fun parts I mean loooooong fun parts. Or rather the author recklessly indulges us and then brings us back to Earth like hello that's not even sane or right.

It's going to be hard to make all the boys get equal "airtime" but I'm disappointed when I don't get to see their reactions to situations that I know they will be jealous about. But we'll probably see it on the next books. I'm not really a fan of the teachers. I know they're young but I always picture them as father figures. The way they try to cross or about to cross the lines of point of no return is enough to slowly thaw my skeptic heart. I just don' want to be rushed with them. My heart is still reeling with all the attention from the younger boys!
The burning question is who gets to kiss her first. The only hint I'm going to give is yes she's finally going to get kissed! Seriously C.L. Stone is so sneaky!

And now for other miscellaneous musings. I'm wondering who Volto is I bet it's someone we wouldn't be expecting. What if it was actually Karen? Or Jay? I thought Rocky's a good guy and a potential love interest but author officially made him a douche. I'm glad she removed the dream sequences it really doesn't make sense to me. I know judging the covers is superficial but let me still do it anyway. I find the cover  too generic though and doesn't gel in with the previous covers. I particularly don't like the shapes.

I said before that I was not really after the plot. But after the major events that happened in the last book I was expecting for a development. It's like a filler episode of hopefully of greater things to come. Compared to all the books in the series this book makes my heart feel heavy but in a good way. It's not about who gets to hug her or kiss her or do whatever things they want to do with her. It's now about are they really in love with her? I particularly liked Nathan's POV. We're now talking about feelings. It was already established when the boys POV first started in the earlier books but I wasn't taking it seriously then. We all do want the fanservice but in the end it's their genuine feelings that triumphs on any given day.

Manga Review: Akatsuki no Yona

Akatsuki no Yona (The Girl Standing in the Blush of Dawn) 14 volumes-ongoing by Mizuho Kusunagi

Princess Yona is the heiress to the throne but was forced to run for her life when her father was killed. There's a legend that there's the four guardians who have inherited the powers of the dragons. She seeks the guardians to ask them to lend her assistance.

The story started off in a bang but I find her purpose afterwards poorly developed. It was also bluntly pointed out by one of the guardians. I hope the anime will polish it or give it some finesse. Don't worry that's only thing I didn't liked about because everything else is perfect as it is. It's really funny and it teases you with just tiny doses of sweetness sprinkled all throughout the story in a very calculated manner. This may be too early for me to say and I might change my mind later but my heart is thumping for Soo Woon! Also does anyone get a Li Ren vibe (of Hana Seishou) from Hak?

I like the backstories of the guardians and the circumstances on how she found them. My favorite character design is the younger and older versions of Seiryuu. He looks badass and cute at the same time. Everytime she finds a guardian the ending theme of Fushigi Yuigi starts to play in my head! The 'guardians' is one of the oldest trick in reverse harem but it feels so fresh again. It also makes me excited to think of this as possibly the next Fushigi Yugi.

I also noticed that all the characters have an older figure that they look up to. It may be a mentor, stepgrandfather, guardian etc. In any other mangas, I'll dismiss it as some annoying elements but in this story it makes it more endearing to me.

I've read the manga when I saw the picture above three years ago but it was just nine chapters then. It was too early for me to say if it was a reverse harem. Since then a lot of people have recommended this and I only found the time to pick it up again after the news of the manga getting animated. I was having second thoughts of reading this again because I might prefer the manga over the upcoming anime. But I'm glad I did, now I can hardly contain myself for the anime!

We had a drought of shoujo manga adaptations and for years our main supply has only been otome adaptations. But recently there's a lot of shoujo in the news and that's including the live action Strobe Edge and anime sequel of Kamisama Hajimemashita. I hope there will be more shoujo manga to be animated or be made into TV series or movies. And to think there's a long list of manga materials to choose from!
