Anime Review: Amnesia OVA

Amensia OVA - 1 episode

In an almost rare instance, all the characters are working closely together to help boost the cafe. It's that world where they can all be cute and silly without any cares to the erm..world. When the opening song started, I just realized how much I missed Amnesia. The anime brings a fun and light-hearted take to the story but the scar of what happened in the series still throbs.

Manga Review: Chiyahoya Shite Yo!

Chiyahoya Shite Yo! - oneshot art and story by Sumire Momoi

Meguru is living her dreamy life in Hoshikuzu Private Academy with population of 99.9% hot boys and 0.01% girls. With the exception of Ouran, reverse harem titles, doesn't blatantly mention that they're indeed a reverse harem and acts innocently oblivious with the set up. Not only does this manga breaks the unspoken rule, it also glorifies it like a rabid fangirl like us would in real life. This oneshot is spot on with what we have been dreaming.

On a side note, I think I'm partial to all-boys school device. You see, I studied at an all-girls school from elementary until highschool. And then there's this nearby all-boys highschool. Very Hana Kimi right??? But after I left for college, the all-boys school started accepting female students! See it does happen in real life. Anyway, all's well ends well as I eventually married my husband who's actually from that all-boys school.

Book Review: Spearwood Academy

Spearwood Academy  Volume 1 (ep. 1-5) by A.S. Oren - ongoing

Spearwood Academy has always been an all-boys school for dragon shapeshifters, until along came Avalon.  The first female student and dragon shapeshifter... in centuries.

First a backstory, I don't normally use reverse harem hashtag when I tweet my blog posts. So I did and stumbled a tweet from A.S. Oren and filed the book under my reading list. Days before this, I was engrossed with Maze Runner Trilogy, not a reverse harem romance story but the set up of the first book is about 50 boys, one girl and one maze. Around the same time, I also received recommendations for two reverse harem English young adult books. I'm such a big fan of YA books. Between reverse harem and non-reverse harem Hollywood TV series, animes and Asian dramas, I also alternately read YA fantasy and YA dystopia genres. This sudden turn of related events was making me excited and I about to post a generic post about YA reverse harem when I received a message from the author right after I followed her. She's giving me a free copy for a review!

This is the first time I get to read something in exchange for a review. I was worried what if I don't like it at all. I'm not sure how to handle it. I started reading the book and find the background story intriguing. Then the heroine was introduced and I was suddenly caught off guard with the burst of emotions. In teenage speak..the feels! It was laid down at the start that Avalon is a big fan of Harry Potter so there's a lot of parallelisms and references. It got me at Ravenclaw remark. But as the world of the dragon shapeshifters is revealed, it is grand, meticulously detailed and magical on it's own right. I can see this as a TV series. Even thought it is being marketed as reverse harem, the storytelling doesn't feel like a hard sell. I'm mesmerized with the the fantasy elements and every now and then I forget that it has reverse harem factors that remembering about is like an awesome perk. This is also the first time I get to try to imagine this many guys in real life. Bishonen stereotyping is a must in a reverse harem and I enjoyed trying to guess which character fits the bill. But still I was surprised with how one of the characters fared and I was like how could I have missed the signs! There's so many possibilities of who she might end up with and I'm really excited on where it will go. I also liked that Avalon's personality is strong but at the same time not immune to the charms of hot boys.

Sorry for the long backstory earlier. As I mentioned, it was supposed to be a separate entry. But bottomline is I'm absolutely thrilled that my love for reverse harem and young adult has intertwined. I hope, no, I predict that this will be the next trend in both genres.

Unconfirmed and Upcoming TV shows

Four Sons One Daughter  - The first title that I saw before is Four Guys One Girl, so I thought at first that it's a reverse harem. It's a family variety/reality show. But later on youngest member has been replaced by Kim Woo Bin of Heirs. It's currently airing in Korea. Anyone watching this? More info from soompi.

The Records of a Night Watchman - It's an upcoming fantasy ghostbusting sageuk featuring flower boys I mean flower bodyguards..I meant bodyguards! I hope it's a reverse harem. It will be broadcasted on the latter half of the year in Korea. From dramabeans.

One of the Boys - This is the first time that I received a recommendation from a person that I've least expected from ..my husband! He saw a trailer in our local TV channel and told me about. Well it figures since he's with me who's breathing reverse harem 24/7. It's about a tomboyish girl living with half-Filipino men. I think this is the first reverse harem in co-habitation set up that we have in the Philippines. You can check out their Facebook account.

Jolly creates a potion which would have serious yet hilarious effects. It's such a fun episode! And the only hint I can give is that you'll see all of them in a new light. Dante really shined in this OVA.

Book Review: The Ghost Bird Series

The Ghost Bird Series - Books 1-5 (ongoing) by C.L. Stone

The very shy and loner, Sang Sorenson moved to a quiet, suburban neighborhood, well more specifically because her mom wants it that way. All her life, she's been told that life is dangerous and that men will do nasty things to her. She never had made any friends but all of a sudden she's gotten her hands (almost) full of friends from the mysterious Academy. And might I add, they're all boys.

Book 1 - Introductions - I have this talent of not really digesting the plot and forgetting about it so I'll be really surprised with the plot twists. And oh boy, I was in disbelief with the number of boys. When I thought my expectations has already been set, another boy is introduced, and then another and another and so on and so forth. But my excitement for the abundance of boys was eclipsed by the very slow pacing.

Book 2 - First Days - I. Hated. Sang. I was jealous of her! I couldn't relate at her at all and I just find it so incredulous that she gets to do those thing with my I mean 'the' boys. They deserve better. But the series picks up for me at the ending of the Book 2.

Book 3 - Friends vs Family - Now I was totally into it. I have now reconciled myself as Sang. This was made by someone who is purely into fangirl fantasies! And later on I read the author admitted that this is a self-indulgent story. No worries! I don't mind at all!

Book 4 - Forgiveness and Permissions and Book 5 - Drop of Doubt - Sometimes I get impatient with the story which is of course the pivotal element. But I hate to confess that I live for those heart-stopping encounters. I admit I sometime cringe at some of the scenes but I guess it depends on who you might be rooting for. To each her own. I was excited and sad at the same time, when I reached Book 5 because it's the last book and I don't want to be left hanging.

I don't have a favorite book--yet. All the books have it's own charms. But I find myself rooting for the types I usually don't fall for in a reverse harem-- the glasses-boy Kota and the flamboyant Gabriel. I started liking Kota when we got his POV. He's supposed to be level-headed but he's human too and just like the rest of boys he's gone crazy over her. I loved Gabriel's witty lines since the first day they met. His character seems to be harmless and not all over Sang. But I only realized I was secretly into him when I finally read his feelings in the spoiler sheet on CL Stone's site. You have got to read those! I literally squealed with all spoilers, most especially when I found out how Kota meets Song for the first time. I like how some characters have grown like North but disappointed with some like Nathan.

The author is planning on making 20 books out of the series. I've got this apprehension at first with the number of boys. How will she make it work? Now I know. It makes perfect sense. Instead of making this end right away, she's taking sweet time for us to slowly savor the story. She has made effort to make all the characters shine. I think the challenge of reverse harem in a Western world setting is that there's a lot of burning questions. This situation is a totally new concept. I liked it how she slowly tackled them as Sang tries to question herself. I also liked the circumstances she created to get away with the reverse harem set-up. I really thought at first that The Academy is a supernatural school and the boys have magical powers. Thanks for the all the people who recommended this series! This is really addicting. Now I'm now off to reading The Scarab Beetle Series.

Book Review: To All The Boys I've Loved Before

To All The Boys I've Loved Before # 1 (ongoing) by Jenny Han

Lara Jean Song always writes farewell letters to the boys she once liked/loved as a way to close her one-sided, imaginary final chapter before moving on with her life. But suddenly the letters were mailed to all the five boys!

I first saw this being given away in dramabeans. (The heroine and the author are Korean-American so it figures that a copy was given to the kdrama site). And the sirens in my head went off when I saw the title and read the plot. We have to wait for book two though, "P.S. I Love You", if it will become a full-blown reverse harem. But if my hunch is right, I get this feeling it will be. I'm really dying to know what happens next.

They say not to judge the book by it's cover. But the very cute and girly cover gives justice to it's contents. I don't know maybe I just haven't read this type of romance for ages. It's a light reading with sweet vibe. Not too angsty or over-the-top melodrama. Just the right amount of chill. I also love her relationship with her sisters. I always imagine what would it be like to grow up with sisters.  The writer is going to visit our country in June and I hope I can make it to the event.

Happy Birthday Taurus!

And the winner for the guy to which Kanade should have an unhealthy relationship with is..the stepbrother, Ikuto! Okay that didn't sound right. Lol. For the first time, I'm happy that there's only 321 people who joined the poll. And I do hope they're all 18 years and above. But I'm nervous that the my review for the anime is consistently the most popular! My favorite cool-looking Yukio was close in the heels of Ikuto. While I'm not really into teacher-type, I'm so into the mysterious and dangerous-looking, Chihiro. But sadly, he's at the bottom in the poll. And here's the rest of the votes:

Ikuto (stepbrother)  128 (39%)
Yukio (former schoolmate)  120 (37%)
Tomoomi (hairdresser) 31 (9%)
Chihiro (teacher) 22 (6%)
Tatsuki (classmate)  20 (6%)

The Scarab Thief # 1 by C.L. Stone

Kayli resorts to pick-pocketing to support her brother no thanks to their drunk father. But while she was on the "job" she catches the attention of the Academy boys or maybe the other way around? This happens at the same time with "The Ghost Bird Series" and at times the two stories will overlap. Actually, it's a bit grown up version but the totally opposite of the earlier series. The genre is under new adult which means the themes are mature like their outlook in life and more risque situations. I liked it that it's not another TGBS. It was a breath of fresh air. I couldn't take another long story of waiting for the heroine to kiss anyone! One is enough. The heroine and the boys also have their own unique personalities that are totally different from TGBS. I also liked that there's the reverse harem stock characters of twins and the villain. I had an Ouran moment when she tried to guess the twins' identities. I thought a twenty plus book deal is an ambitious but a heaven-sent news to fans, but creating another and a bolder, sexier Academy boys seems too good to be true. But then again this shouldn't be a surprise to us reverse harem fans since spin-offs are a common occurrence in otomes. But I'm not entirely hooked with the story yet. The Academy boys of  Ashley Waters High still holds a special place in my heart. We'll see as the series progress.
