Drama Review: Hajimete Koi o Shita Hi ni Yomu Hanashi

Hajimete Koi o Shita Hi ni Yomu Hanashi (A Story to Read When You First Fall in Love) 10 episodes based on manga by Aki Mochida

Junko Harumi was an ace student in highschool but her failure to get into Tokyo University will lead her to live an unfulfilling life in her thirties. She still lives with her family, just ended a half-hearted relationship and is in danger of losing her job in cram school. Then she meets Kyohei Yuri, a delinquent student, who's aiming for Tokyo University. Can she help him reach an impossible dream?

It is reverse harem with a total of three guys who are in love with her. The other two are her former schoolmates. At one point, her friend Miwa mentioned reverse harem. I love it when reverse harem titles do that. It's as if there's an unspoken rule that they do not identify as reverse harem. I wished I made a compilation of it.

This drama really hit a sore spot when they call her old. Ouch! And what's up with back pain when she's only 31. She's not 70 or 80! I am not a fan of age difference and in this case, the woman is older and the main guy is younger. And she's the teacher and he's her student. And he's under 18 years at the start of the drama. Thus I was not keen with the premise but to my surprise, I was hooked with the story right away. I love it when Yuri gets jealous. It's hilarious too when Junko makes herself looks older than she's supposed to be and Yuri sees right through it. I didn't find him handsome or remarkable at first but his expressions and acting just consumes me! I was caught surprised when he stuck his tongue out which is so out of his character but oh so charming. But even though I'm totally smitten with Yuri I can't help to root for the ever dependable cousin, Masashi.

I feel guilty for crushing younger guys on Good Morning Kiss, The Flame's Daughter and now this. Yeah, that's my new hobby now. But heck I am close to the actress' age so there's hope for me after all. Just kidding. But I'm impressed with how Fukuda (Junko) was able to portray a role that is five years younger. Her real age is 35.  Rysuei (Yuri) is actually older by 5 years too in real life. He's already 22. Meanwhile, Kento (Masashi) is 30 and  Tomoya (Kazuma) is 32. This is also Kento's fourth reverse harem drama. He was in Atashinchi no Danshi (but not part of harem), Asuko March and Party wa Owatta.

So yeah I'm happy they cast an older woman while all the guys are younger in real life. Maybe because in Hollywood they almost always cast younger women for roles against much older men. For example, The Greatest Showman: Zendaya, 22 and Zac, 31; Michelle, 38 and Hugh, 50. Kdramas are fun of age difference too, for example, Scarlet Heart Ryeo and more but it's noteworthy that kdramas and jdramas are fond of noona romances. By the way, what is the Japanese equivalent for noona? And now I realized that there are other reverse harem noona dramas like Hot For Teacher and  Flower Ramyun Shop. There are also other dramas where there is a younger character added in the harem so technically has a noona element like Luncho no Joou, Suki na Hito ga Iru Koto, From 5 to 9, Gogh The Starry Night, Himitsu no Hanazono and so much more. I'm not even going to attempt to look for noona in anime and manga. @_@ Also check out teacher tag for other titles with student-teacher relationship.

I find it cute that there are so many pink items in the scenes or in Junko's clothes that match with his pink hair. I also admired the dedication and focus of the characters in studying. And it makes me pumped up  to go back in time and study again. Okay, wait. No I don't want to go back to study again. Lol.

I enjoyed the drama but I was disappointed with the ending. I wanted to see her and the guy well into their relationship. But then again that might be the charm of the story that it doesn't make viewers uncomfortable. But don't let me get started with Erika.

Hooray for my second review from the latest winter reverse harem lineup! ^_^

Related Review: Female Managers and All-boy Idol Groups: Idolish 7, B-Project and Top Management

$

I decided not to write a review of Idolish 7 since it's not a reverse harem. But I'm in the same predicament again after watching B-Project. Then I remembered, I still have another completed kdrama that fits the bill. Okay so might as well post it in one go. Here goes for my review of female managers and all-boy idol groups. It's more of a comparison and contrast of the three.

Idolish 7- anime- 17 episodes

Tsumugi Takanashi is a new manager that was assigned to handle a newly-formed idol group in her father's company.

B-PROJECT Mousou*Scandal- anime- 12 episodes
B-PROJECT~Zecchō*Emotion- anime- 12 episodes

Tsubasa Sumisora is the new A and R to B-Project which consists of 3 sub-units: Kitakore, THRIVE and MooNs. In the second season, a new group is added, the KiLLER KiNG.

Top Management -kdrama -16 episodes

Seo Eun-soo is a former idol trainee turned manager to the group, S.O.U.L , who is trying to make a comeback. And oh yeah she has the power to see the future.

Idolish 7 and B-Project are mixed media with animes, manga, rhythm game and more while Top Management is based on web comic. Since all three titles are about idol groups trying to make it in the show business, it's inevitable to have similar characters and situations-- having a parent scandal, performing in the rain, illness, being an otaku, plagiarisms, postponed debut, mysterious composers and of course, same activities like rehearsals, concerts, TV, film and commercial appearances. They are in different stages though - Idolish 7 is in the brink of debut, B-Project is already established and S.O.U.L is trying to stage a comeback.

I find Idolish 7 a breath of fresh air as the guys are not fawning over her. Until it hit me that it will not progress to any romantic feelings... at all. I was hoping it was a reverse harem because I only found out about the heroine when I watched the first episode and I thought it was a surprise marketing ploy like in Sengoku Night Blood of saving the announcement for the heroine for last.

With B-Project, it's my fault that I was quick to label it as reverse harem after having seen just the  couple of episodes of season 1 before procrastinating again. The start was very promising as if they are drawn to her but I should have known better when they never include the heroine in the wallpapers or key visual of the group.

Idolish 7 respects Tsumugu as their manager, while B-Project is more doting with Tsubasa. There is a guy from each of the 2 groups who are interested with their managers but it never progressed into anything serious or highlighted at all. There are hints of BL too. Tsubasa is an anime only character but despite that, her character plays a bigger role in the story. Tsubasa and Tsumugu could be twins with their personalities...

I prefer the story, the MV and costumes of Idolish 7 over B-Pro. It was easy to watch and the story is realistic. It was a chore to watch B-Pro but I enjoyed the fun dynamics of the group. For choreography, I am handing it to B-Pro. I'm mesmerized with the group's dancing in the opening of the sequel and in their concert. I feel pride and an overwhelming need to see them in the flesh.

Top Management is heroine and romance-centric but it was a love triangle only. And among the three, this is my favorite. Storywise and for the songs too. I know it's not fair since they are different medium and country of origin. It's an unpopular opinion that I am not into all-boy idol group trope but Top Management is an exception. I really enjoyed it! It's fun, exciting and with light drama. It was a torture to wait for the second half as it had a break halfway through. And no, I'm not crushing on anyone younger again but despite their looks, I am so in for their chemistry with Soo Eun Soo. It's rare for me to be convinced of the chemistry in kdrama nowadays. The ending is hinting a sequel. I do hope it gets one!

Idolish 7 will have a second season. It already had a spin-off featuring their rival, Trigger on Youtube Originals. Top Management is also through Youtube Originals. We now have new enabler for pseudo reverse harem titles. Special mention to Cha Eun-woo (Woo Yeon-woo) who's also in another pseudo reverse harem, To Be Continued, with his group ASTRO as themselves. Z. Hera (Song Haena) is also in reverse harem kdrama, Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo.

I think I have enough of all-boy idol animes to last me for a while. It's actually a good thing for me that Dynamic Chord is not a reverse harem. Upcoming anime, Ensemble Stars and I★CHU Étoile Stage anime would most likely have no romance or no heroine. It may take a while for me to finish Uta Pri season 3. Sorry!

Levels of Reverse Harem

$
0
0
Reverse Harem titles were very limited when I first started the blog eleven years ago. I was flexible with many titles where it's only one or two guys interested in her and other gray areas. But we are now at a point where I can be strict with labeling reverse harem. Let's start with the classification of reverse harem-ness. This is for my sake too if in case I run off course again.

1. Five Flowers - This is literally reverse harem. The heroine has a harem of her own in her inner chamber. And we only have one example for this, manga and drama, Ooku. I'm not sure if this has already been used in Western Fiction though.

2. Four Flowers -This is the most commonly accepted definition. Three or more guys with romantic interests with the heroine. For example, Angelique in otome games, Akatsuki no Yona in anime and manga and You're Beautiful in Asian Drama. The guys are usually in a group or sometimes the girl is the only denominator, for example, Hot Gimmick. The heroine usually chooses a guy or for some otome-based anime, none at all. Reverse harem has crossed to Western Fiction in books with the heroine having relationships with all the guys.

There are some who undergo gender reversal from male to female for example, Ouji to Majou to Himegimi. There are instances too of bisexual characters in the harem like Nuriko in Fushigi Yugi and Shima in Kiss Him, Not Me.

3. Three Flowers  - This is the gray area. The guys are on different timelines or place or  just hinting interest. For example, Akagami no Shirayuki (manga and anime) and First Girl (manga). May or may not be reverse harem. There are at times too that the reverse harem or romance plays as a secondary theme like in the cases of Code: Breaker and Shugo Chara.

The levels below are no longer reverse harem but for classification sake and for fun we'll include them in the levels.

4. Two Flowers - These are the girl with flowers boys, the only girl in all-boy school/club/whatever, the only girl in the dorm/home, the girl disguised as a boy in all an-boy school/club etc. It's usually just one or two guys who like the girl. For Example: Fruits Basket, Hana Yori Dango and Hana Kimi. For the longest time, I've been considering them as reverse harem and I love these titles but it's time to set clear boundaries.  I may or may not blog  about it but if I do it will be tagged under Related Reviews.

4. One Flower -  Heroine? Check. Bevy of Bishonen? Check. Romance? Zilch. These are usually multimedia aimed at women for example Idolish 7 and B-Project. It will be tagged under Related too.

5.Zero Flower - These are usually otome games turned anime with the heroine left on the chopping block.  For Example, Dynamic Chord and Bakumatsu. I also consider bishonen anime under here like Free and anthropomorphism like Miracle Train. Sorry, I do not watch these type since I still have so much reverse harem backlog in my plate.

You may or may not agree with some of my points. There is no clear definition that was set in stone that hey this is reverse harem so you must all follow it. This is my attempt of defining reverse harem as the genre evolved on its own. Who knows these levels may be updated again in the future. We'll see. I will be creating tags for the levels soon.

Book Review: The Veil Diaries Book 1-7

$
0
0

The Veil Diaries by B. L. Brunnemer 7 books - ongoing

Alexis Delaney moves in with her new guardian after being abused by her mother. She clicked on right away with the boys in school: Ethan, Isaac, Asher, Miles and Zeke.  But will they stay around when they find out that she can see ghosts and the rest of the extra baggage that comes with her ability?

I'm going to review this as a whole instead of per book since it will be hard to keep it spoiler-free. I was  ready to take a plunge with reverse harem books and I just picked the one with the highest scores in Goodreads not really caring what the plot is. To my dismay, it was with an abusive parent, highschool setting and slow burn...again. But wait...this time, the heroine is bad-ass and her relationships with them start with friendship which is refreshing from the books I read so far.

The Ghost Bird series is one of the first reverse harem that I've read and been reading this like forever so I can't help compare it with other books with highschool setting. Particularly with the individual scents and special pet names for each pairing. It's not fair so I'm going to try to stop with the comparison. The Veil Diaries has its own brand of unpredictability and this book is going in a different direction from everything I complained about TGB.

It's unavoidable to have character stereotypes akin to anime or manga. In Western Fiction, there's the muscle type, the geeky guy, the twins and the boy-next-door.  And someone is always super rich. But the pet names also happens in anime/manga but is this going to be the thing now in books? And Lexi also fits the tag for anime/manga of nosebleed girl and red-haired heroine.

Overall, I like how the reverse harem did not happen overnight. My only problem is that in Book 6, when a reason came up why multiple relationships are critical I was not convinced. I also can't help to think reverse harem books or even manga/anime use the absentee parents in order to make the reverse harem work without nosy parents. In books, this is the third book I've read with an abusive parent already while the other three are orphans. In anime/manga, the parents are usually dead or are in hiding due to debt.

Even though they are character stereotypes there are background stories for each of the guys too. I still can't decide who I want. I equally love them all which is a first for a novel. Okay, I don't particularly like Zeke with his muscles and controlling behavior. Omg I just described my husband. LOL But I have a favorite scene/s for the rest of the guys. I enjoy the sticky situations she gets into like the guys stripping her...because she's freezing! Book 7 is going to be a new adult. So a warning to our younger readers here to maybe put this on the top of your To Be Read pile when you turn eighteen.

I loved Lexi well except for Book 2. Her sassiness needs to turn a notch lower. It makes me cringe and looking back throwing the phone in the pool was overkill. Lexi is also making me stressed when she's not taking care of herself.

The larger story is slowly brewing in the background which I don't mind. The focus is on establishing their relationships first. But by Book 6, the conflicts are now starting to become full force: their relationships and Veil-related.  The book surprised me of the paranormal twists. It became into a different series but not in a bad way.

Now thinking about it, I feel bad but much love for Lexi that she had to deal so much from her mother, ghosts, human, not-so-human antagonists and now the boys fighting with each other.  Even the boys have complicated family backgrounds. There is a trigger warning for Book 3 onwards.

I wish I could discuss more of the story arcs but the reason I avoided to do the per book review is for you to enjoy the series. I am pleased that their relationships which is much more believable versus on having insta-love with all. I appreciate their different and complicated personalities and how they fight and love each other at the same time.  And the paranormal element slowly builds up into a world where the possibilities are endless. I'll do a more in-depth review of future books. It is set for a total of 15 books. The current state of their relationships on the next book will be uncharted waters for me, I'm so afraid and excited at the same time.

And pet peeve: Why do book female protagonists keep on hiding their phones inside their bra? It's bulky and will give you radiation! I even run a poll on Facebook. Out of whopping 36 votes (haha) 12 said they do it as well and 24 said, no. I rest my case. Annnd burning question: Why is Rory so rich?  Never mind, I found the answer on offical Facebook club. Special mention for the best fan club! I'm a member of a few fan groups of reverse harem books and this is the nicest group with fun discussion and mind-blowing theories. Please join to check the POVs of the guys too.

(I have only found from one of the replies from Viz coverage of Hatori that Vic Mignogna voiced Tamaki in the English dubbed version of Ouran High School Host Club.)

Funimation filed a response last June 13 to Mignogna's lawsuit. Funimation has dropped Mignogna's in the midst of sexual harassments dating back to 2008. Check out for more information on ANN. He is also popular for his roles in Dragonball as Broly, Full Metal Alchemist as Edward Elric and more. He also voiced Futo Asahina of Brothers Conflict and Takenaga Oda of The Wallflower.

Drama Review: Lascivious Lady

Lascivious Lady  or Unique Lady - 24 episodes

Lin Luo Jing tries an otome game and then finds herself inside the game as the main character/player. The object of the game is to find true love. Will she find it from the four characters? There's the irritating royalty (Zhong Wu Mei), a rich playboy (Jin Chen), a bodyguard with a secret (Liu Xiu Wen) and a mysterious ethereal man (Hua Ying Chi).

Otome isekai with being transported (isekai ten’i) or reincarnated (isekai tensei) are popular in light novels but before I get a chance to read one, I was surprised that there's now a cdrama. I saw this labeled as based on otome game but I am unable to confirm. There are plenty of handsome men, alright and I was drawn to the bodyguard and ethereal man. I was excited to watch it but as I watch further it was difficult to keep my focus even for just one episode. It came to the point that it was getting harder and harder to pick it up again. The only thing that kept me going is that I wanted to finish the reverse harem winter line up.

Overall, I find the story, acting, and direction of the drama just weird. They have an excuse to get away with the weirdness since it is within an otome game but it backfired. The FMC (female main character) uses stage whisper, she talks to herself a lot and she always overhears critical plot points. These make sense since she's in the game but it annoys me.

The guys' insta love for the FMC made me lose interest. Yes, they are fictional characters in the game but I still need to feel chemistry for any of the characters. Maybe I felt it in the latter part but I was too disgruntled with the story by then.  And sadly, the two guys I was eyeing are the weakest links with their acting. For someone who loves a gazillion of bishonen, being a flower boy is not enough. The story might suck at times but I would want my boys to have great character and acting chops. There are many times that I dismiss a certain actor as not my type but their acting just swoons me over. Case in point, the main guys of Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo, Hajimete Koi o Shita Hi ni Yomu Hanashi and Top Management (one flower; see levels). I finished the 52 episodes of another reverse harem cdrama, Flame's Daughter, purely for the acting of the second and third leads. But the 24 episodes of Lascivious Lady was torture.

I don't normally get this bewildered from a story or the characterization. But even the prime minister and the king both seem strange to me. It's like the writer or director was on a trip. And there are two characters who are supposed to be Persians. Hmmkay.  But the rest of the acting of the cast is fine especially of the two leads when the story became serious.

There are game elements that I liked but not enough to save the drama. For example, the characters cards whenever a new character enters the picture,  the incorporation of lives and save points and lastly, the use of four actresses over and over again for different roles. LOL. Oh yeah she can change her wardrobe too. I just find it odd when she took off her skirt revealing a short skirt or shorts I can't remember now. I don't know why I'm being a stickler for this like Yuzi in culottes too in Sengoku Night Blood when Miyaka was in her school uniform almost the whole time in Fushigi Yugi. The fight scenes and the Chinese costume are of course superb as usual but except for the bodyguard's choker. It's so damn distracting.

There is a brush of gender bender and fujoshi elements at the early part and later on a reincarnation within the isekai which reminds of Flame's Daughter. I jumped into my first isekai otome game trope and I felt so duped. Don't worry though I will still give this trope a chance to wash off the disappointment. And to my amazement, the story ended in a cliffhanger and loose ends. I am not looking forward to another season. I can't even remember the last time I have this strong negative feeling for a reverse harem. Maybe you can watch it to satisfy your curiosity then once you get this feeling that it's getting dragging, you can then drop it and never look back.

Book Review: The Veil Diaries Book 1-7

$

Here's the key visual and teaser of Love Alarm drama. It is based on Korean webtoon by Chon Kye-young. (Unconfirmed reverse harem but as per wiki there's a third guy who likes her too. ) It premieres on August 22 via Netflix.

I have added Coffee and Vanilla web drama under Summer Reverse Harem 2019. It is based on manga by Takara Akegami.  Synopsis from AsianWiki:
Risa Shiroki (Haruka Fukuhara) is a 20-year-old university student. She came to Tokyo from her hometown in the countryside to attend a university. Although Risa Shiroki is pretty and popular with male students, she has never had a boyfriend. She dreams of having a sweet love. One day, Hiroto Fukami (Dori Sakurada) appears in front of her in a suit. He is a 30-year-old business man. He is gentle and looks perfect. Risa Shiroki and Hiroto Fukami fall in love, but Hiroto Fukami has a dark past.

(There's third guy after her on ep. 4. Hopefully, I am not wrong but the cringey drama is making me wish it's not reverse harem. BTW, I post first impressions and weekly mini-reviews of reverse harem I am currently watching and reading on Patreon)
