Book Review: The Ghost Bird Book 9-12: The Healing Power of Sugar/ First Kiss/ Black and Green/ Love's Cruel Redemption

The Healing Power of Sugar

Luke is acting strange and Sang tries her best to spend time with him if he’s in the same boat with their plans. Sang also finds a new complication with the school ’s guidance counselor.


The focus of the book is on Luke. It was a drag to start reading it since I am not a fan of Luke. And it’s been too long since the last time I read the last installment. But as the story progressed...Boom! I’m caught up in their own world where time slows down. You have no choice but to abandon everything and you live and breathe with them as time becomes irrelevant. I am hypnotized again to join the long, sweet ride. It did help that our internet was down for three days now and I was able to progress with reading it. I realized I was enjoying it again during the Thanksgiving party. I also can’t wait for development with Kota. The groundworks are now being laid for Kota and Mr. Blackbourne since they are the only two left that Sang has yet to kiss. I have a love and hate relationship with the teachers and I feel hostile again with Mr. Blackbourne. It might be with the Mister title. And for some reason, Mr. Grey (Fifty Shades) kept popping on my head because Sang is so obedient with him. Although I’m not a fan of Luke I liked the plot twist in terms of external conflict. I did have a theory before but the ending killed that theory. With the internal conflict, we see jealousies now from other boys to one another. North to Luke. Kota to Luke. Luke to Kota. (?) God.  I love and hate you Sang. Overall, a filler book. The conflict with Mr. Hendricks and Volto was such a mess. The introductions to Academy is imminent. I’m liking these meetings at every end of the book. I’m not sure if I already pointed that out.   



First Kiss

 They celebrated Christmas and Sang finally gets introduced to Academy during camping event. Sang now tries to convince Kota to join their decision. Sang also realizes that her past has hurt her more than she has realized.

I know this is still the second book review but as early as now I'm going to say that this is my favorite book among the fours books I've caught on. The Sound of Snowfall excerpt is actually part of this book. And I want to just freeze the time with Sang and the boys being happy and worry-free. (So over the drama). There was so much fun and important developments happened in this book. There's Christmas, exchange gifts ( I really looked forward to the gifts lol), finally meeting the Academy, camping with the Academy and the KISSES!!!!! There's a crossover too with Scarab Series. It was a jam-packed nonstop rollercoaster ride. I just feel so much hurt for Kota though.

Anyway, the author had created another reason yet again on the reason for the reverse harem element. If you are not a fan of reverse harem it made sense. For us fans, I'm secretly pissed that even though I know we are being lead to this. I am convinced and impressed with having to pass it as natural as possible. A foolproof reverse harem. This book reminds me of how I love this series. They are outside the school and its drama. Everything is new and exciting. It's a breath of fresh air.


Black and Green


The book shows backstories of the two leaders Mr. Blackburn and Dr. Green but we get to see the POV from Dr. Green only. A new complication with Sang's family begins.

Having just said the last book was the best ever and then poof! We are back to reality. Back in the school drama again.  The same thing of various non stop kissing one from another. More jealousy
The slow burn of the problem is depressing. It's going to be tough to top the last book.  But overall I'm happy how the ending saved the story. I suddenly loved this character we are not supposed to love at all. I'm ready to jump the cliff now if it that conflict did not end. I can really feel the despair. 

I love the play of words of the title. The book also serves a background story of Mr. Blackburn and Dr. Green. You get to understand more about how the Academy works. But I don't really buy it. Not entirely convinced on how the two managed to be the youngest ever to graduate from Academy.

Why do get a nagging feeling that the author is a guy? I wanted to be mum on this but some of the stuff is not realistic from point of view of a woman. She always put her phone inside her bra and she's not always wearing baggy tops. It would be too obvious especially if she's in school uniform. And when they at one of the guy's houses she has to wear an oversized top where there is an illusion of not wearing bottoms. It's like this is a guy fantasy. Maybe I'm just overthinking it and girls do put their phones in their bra all the time and are not aware of lampshading effects.


Love's Cruel Redemption

Basically Nathan's book. Nathan and Sang were "caught" by Kota's family. They are now faced with repercussions on what will happen if others outside their circle discover their set-up. Nathan asks for help from the other Ghost Bird team.

The boredom from the last books continues to this one.  All about problems and consequences. All the good stuff happened in the first two books and nothing was left to make the remaining two exciting...One character is being framed as Volto. It's too easy if the character is indeed Volto. I will not be surprised if it's just the author duping as and I suddenly have an idea of it might be now. OMG.

And to continue my theory of the author's gender. She took off her shirt to stop bleeding. I'm like...If I'm so wrong with this one...Sorry! 

I will probably not read Scarab again and I'll put on hold Meeting Sang POVs of the other boys.  I am just ready to move on to another series now. I love The Academy but the slow burn and filler type are taking a toll on me. I also have a theory that CL Stone may create book spin-off or just a novella about the very first ghost bird team when they're younger. 

Looking back now Sang's character is very problematic to me now. We are being conditioned to think that this is the only development for her character. But in order for this to work, she's isolating herself with other people and just centering on the guys. Just doesn't sit well on me. I am used to the girl being pursued by the guys. Reverse harem novels first set this path that the heroine may be interested with all...but in this case, she's breathing just them in her life. She's not letting others in. They spoil her and as much as she wants to be independent she's very dependent on them on everything. Maybe I do really need a breather to compare other books.

I normally don't start a new book until I blog about the last one I read since my feelings and memories will be more into the last book I've read. But the problem is I read a non-reverse harem book which is Cassandra Clare's Queen of Air and Darkness. It's hard to blog about the 4 books I've read ages ago and I know I forgot a lot of important details now. Sorry!

News Round Up: Doubt~ Usotsuki Otoko wa Dare? movie, She's Gotta Have S2 and more!

Voltage's puzzle-based otome game, Doubt~ Usotsuki Otoko wa Dare? (Doubt~ Who is the Lying Man?), will have a movie adaptation that will be released in autumn of 2019. The heroine attends a matchmaking event after being betrayed by her boyfriend. Nine of the men are lying to her while one of them truly loves her. The second season of She's Gotta Have It will be air on May 24 on Netflix. For more information check Deadline.

The live action drama adaptation of  Meiji Tokyo Renka will air starting on April 9 with eight episodes. The movie will open after the series ends.  For more information check ANN.



The cast for the English dub of Fruits Basket was announced and most of the cast from the 2001 anime are returning including the voice actors for Tohru, Yuki, Kyo and Shigure. The first two episodes will be shown in theaters in the United States on March 26 (dubbed) and March 27 (subbed). There will be exclusive gift packs and commentaries from the Japanese and English voice actors. The anime will air on April 6. For more information check ANN.

Harukanaru Toki no Naka de 6 has a stageplay adaptation featuring the idol group, Tsubaki Factory. The title is Harukanaru Toki no Naka de 6 Gaiden ~Tasogare no Kamen~ (Haruka: Beyond the Stream of Time 6 Side Story, Twilight Mask) and will run from June 6-16 in Tokyo and June 22-23 in Osaka. I'm just going to leave this here again. Just saw this on Netflix. Boy's Paradise under Ugly Duckling TV series Thai drama. Originally aired on 2015.



Voice actress Hiroko Konishi shared her #MeToo experiences in the anime industry. There was a time, she was instructed to go the the springs naked with the director as instructed by her manager. She refused and was consequently denied roles. The director is name Akitaro Daichi who also directed reverse harem anime shows like Fruits Basket (2011), Kamisama Kiss and recently Meiji Tokyo Renka.For more information check ANN.


Kim Jung Hoon's (Witch Yoo Hee) ex-girlfriend filed a lawsuit against him after failing to provide her lease payment as they have agreed during pregnancy. Tell me something about yourself? 

Hi! I’m Eevee, I’m 24, live in the USA, and I’m an Infant Teacher, and also in school to get my CDA and associates in early childhood development. I love to write fanfiction, game, buy merch and read in my spare time.

How did you discover reverse harem? What got you into reverse harem?


Oh geez, this was forever ago! I remember I was in high school? When I discovered this site after I got into Otome games. I primarily started to play them in HS to help me practice Japanese. What better way than to study visual novels with pretty bishounen!


How did you discover Reverse Harem Garden?


Like I mentioned, I was in high school, and I was scouring every source of Otome gaming news. I actually have Reverse Harem Garden bookmarked on my bookmark tab. I had to leave a lot of hobbies while I was studying in my undergrad, and when I graduated…I accidentally clicked on this bookmarked website and rediscovered my love for Otome games and reverse harems about two years ago now! 

Why do you love reverse harem?

Mainly the pretty bishounen, the fun stories, the fun self-inserts I can do in my fanfiction!

What are your all-time reverse harem favorites?

Hakuouki, Uta no Prince-sama, Code Realize, Amnesia, Heart no Kuni no Alice series…I could really go on and on, but these are what come to mind first!

What are your favorite character types in bishonen? 

I’m all over the board really…I love the soft bois, megane bois, tsunderes, kuuderes…I tend to like over half of the bois in a cast LOL.

Who are your favorite heroines?

Cadia and, Haruka, Alice are some of my favorites, since I can kind of relate to them.

What are your favorite reverse harem tropes?

Idol, vampire, bois with tragic pasts, I love many tropes as well, I’m a sucker for a lot of these.

Oh, this is a fun one! (Like I haven’t thought about it before lol) Hakuouki’s Iba Hachiro, Okita Souji, Saito Hajime and Ryoma; Amnesia’s Kent, Ikki and Shin; Code Realize’s Fran, Lupin and Van; Uta no Prince’s Tokiya, Cecil, Ai, Reiji, Ren, Natsuki; Fire Emblem’s Marth, Fredrick, Chrom, Ryoma, Leo, Stahl, Henry, Jakob, Kaze; Clover no Kuni no Alice’s Boris, Ace, Julius; Touken Ranbu’s Mikazuki, Kasen, Ichigo, Mitsudaikiri, Tsurumaru; Psychedelic of the Black Butterfly’s Kagiha. Honestly, this list could go on forever.

Memorable/ happiest/ saddest moment that is related to reverse harem.

The bad endings for my favorite characters get to me! Hakuouki’s tend to be bad and beyond tragic. Psychedelica of the Black Butterfly made me CRY ON END FOR HOURS because of how sad it was. I have yet to find the real true end for Kagiha and I haven’t gone back to try yet. Bad Apple Wars is another one that made me spend many tears, and Alma’s route was so good! They had me fooled at the end.

If you have three wishes for reverse harem genre? What would it be?

We get stronger female characters like Cardia or at least more balanced. (More translations, but isn’t that always a wish? Lol). I’m also hoping more things get ported to PC or Nintendo Switch real soon.

What are your all time non-reverse harem favorites (anime, manga, drama, books, games)?

I love tons of other things too lol! I’m a Marvel junkie, KDramas for days, and Pokemon are just some of my other passions.

Related/Movie Review: To All The Boys I've Loved Before

Dear TATBILB,

I have mentioned this before that before the reverse harem western novels exploded I resorted to labeling young adult books as reverse harem novels with heroine and multiple guys such like this and E. Lockheart's The Boyfriend List. And as well as books unsuspecting of reverse harem trope like  Kiera Cass' The Heir. But now that the reverse harem is a genre in western setting novels, I noticed that that the heroine must make the reverse harem work with all the harem members unlike in eastern setting (Japanese, Korean, Chinese)  where the heroine chooses one or no one at all. The book where the movie is based on is kind of related to mangas or Asian dramas however the movie adaptation really made it about the main couple: Peter and Lara Jean. In the book, Josh didn't have that much participation but in the movie, it's like he barely existed. I was also hoping there was more of Josh even in the book but it's just the icky factor that she's her sister's boyfriend. The third guy will play a bigger role in the second book and Josh will be out of story. (Also, the actor for the third guy was recast. See news.) I kept on reading the series in hopes of getting a reverse harem closure but sadly I did not get one. I also had hopes that they will have more liberty in the movie of making it more of a reverse harem but it's surprisingly faithful to the book. As far as I can remember, don't see any glaring difference with the book except for diminution of Josh's existence. Oh they also left an element from Josh and Margot.  

So which is better? Book or Movie? I normally would say books are always better than the movie if I have already read it. But in this case, I would say the movie. But let me set this straight this first. I was so-so with the book but when I saw the trailer I was so excited. But after I watching it I was back to being so-so again. Then the movie blew up and  TATBILB becomes most rewatched movie on Netflix and with sequel on the works. I realized I had a set a very unrealistic expectation of the movie from the trailer. I realized too that this movie is now how Clueless was for me when I was a teenager.  I had rewatch it again from a rose colored glasses and not as a cynical adult and I can say I've enjoyed it the second time around. 

I liked the Instagram-worthy cinematography. The retro clothes.  The casting. I'm not gaga over Noah Centino though but I love Lara Candor! She's perfect Lara Jean! It warms my heart when I see fans gushing their love from art, quotes and especially Asians dressing up as Lara Jean for Halloween. It's interesting to note too that it was released in the time where representation matters. The sisters were suggested to be whitewashed by producers before and thankfully the author didn't agree. But as much as I love the three actresses as sisters it's weird they look all Asian yet different since they're from different descent.

Even though I don't watch much movies as I used to, my heart has a special place for late 90s and early 2000s teenage movies and romcoms. I'm glad Netflix has tapped into this market. I'm glad too that Netlfix has unconsciously become a reverse harem enabler (see She's Gotta Have It and Good Morning Call), well although this is not a straight up reverse harem, I hope this will get the industry to discover the appeal of reverse harem. My dream too is that for reverse harem novels to be adaptation into drama series like in CW or Netflix. And well I hope more manga or otomes games getting anime and drama adptations too.

I still recommend to read the book. I also tried to watched 16 Candles from the movie contract but it's a very problematic movie for me. Sadly, I think this will be my last review of the series and I'll stop blogging news about this too. I was having second thoughts if I'll still blog the movie but this will be final love letter for the book that made me hope and dream of reverse harem novels. I'm happy that the book I tagged as reverse harem would someday be the most rewatched movie on Netflix and made young and young heart swoon.

Disney has created mobile otome game, Disney Twisted-Wonderland, where the player can date villains. The player is summoned to alternate world of Nightraven College. The college is divided into seven dormitories, which is based on different Disney franchise. Only one dormitory is revealed at the moment. I★CHU smartphone game gets an anime adaptation titled I★CHU Étoile Stage. It is unconfirmed reverse harem but it is a love rhythm adventure game. The player will act as teacher and producer for the idols and the game has a total of 42 voice actors. Check out for more information on ANN.  


Konami announced Tokimeki Memorial Girl's Side 4 in 2020 but the platform is yet to be revealed. Tokimeki Memorial was first released on 1994 targeting male players. Tokimeki Memorial Girl's Side otome game was created in 2002. It also inspired restaurant smartphone game, Tokimeki Restaurant☆☆☆, and film, Tokimeki Restaurant☆☆☆ Miracle 6. Anime Review: Meiji Tokyo Renka

Mei keeps to herself because of her ability to see ghosts.  Not wanting to be center of attention she finds herself chosen in a magic trick. She's then brought to the past where she meets popular men of Meiji history.


I have actually seen the movies, Meiji Tokyo Renka Movie 1: Yumihari no Serenade and Meiji Tokyo Renka Movie 2: Hanakagami no Fantasia a few years back on Youtube with Spanish subtitles which I then translated into English using the auto-translation feature of Youtube. Oh and it was removed right away. :D The end result was a crude translation but you get the gist of the story. But it feels like it doesn't count as completed so I didn't blog about it. Even though it might have gotten lost in translation, it was no brainer that the movies were bo-ring. The main guy or route is also different.

Now this anime series has redeemed itself. It's the same story and characters but the treatment and storytelling is refreshing, natural and entertaining. Of course the other conflicts are different but the bigger story is the same.

I didn't like the Ogai. It feels insta love.  But he grew on me at the last couple episodes. He reminds me of Tamaki of Ouran. My favorite guy is Otojiro or basically the gender bender episode. I wished his route was explored further. I wanted more of Otojiro and Mei. I want to eat Sunsho-san! He looks like a matcha especially when his eyes is lackluster. And surprisingly he's the most seductive of 'em all! I didn't know he had it in him. Kyoka is adorable too and I'm biased since he's my favorite from the movie. Mei's really funny and she’s vocal with her romantic feelings unlike most of otome games turned anime. I liked how she started as timid girl and in the end she's confident with her decisions in life. But that doesn't mean I wanted the path that she chose. Okay, I'm zipping my mouth now. But I hope the live action drama and live action movie has a different ending. Remember what they did with Hakuouki movie?

It's been a while since I watched a reverse harem anime that I enjoyed. And it was successful in making the reverse harem element not forced unlike other otome adaptations. But to be fair, I'm not yet done with the previous seasons. I also enjoyed the friendship between the bishonen. I can't remember the last time I favored the guys collectively instead of individual characters vying for the heroine's attention. Now that I try to think about it my favorite bishonen dynamics would be Yona of the Dawn, Ouran High School Host Club and Fushigi Yugi.

The jazzy, retro opening reminds me Hanayaka Nari, Waga Ichizoku: Kinetograph because of the setting. But the similarities end there. For other isekai animes and  historical animes, just click on the tags.  For isekai x historical figures, you may try Nise no Chigiri manga and Sengoku Night Blood anime. It's embarrassing that I've learned the term isekai (transported into a different world) only recently. ^^;;; Thanks JaredMithrandir. I also found out just now that the tags are available though web version only.

I think you could live without seeing the first two movies. It was very serious but this time around the anime series version is laidback and fun. Hooray for posting a review right away from winter season and first anime review too for the year! My plan is to watch currently airing shows and then work my way down to seasons in descending order.

The official site released the trailer and visual of the movie adaptation of Meiji Tokyo Renka. The film opens on June 21. Check out on ANN for more information.





Brocolli collaborates with Happinet for otome game, Jack Jeanne, which will be released on 2020 through Switch. The character designs is by Sui Ishida of Tokyo Ghoul. Here is the plot: 
The game's story centers around protagonist Kisa Tachibana, a girl who had given up a career in theater, but receives an invitation to attend the Univers Drama School, an elite drama school for male actors, where students play female roles (referred to as "Jeanne" roles) in addition to male roles ("Jack" roles). However, to maintain her enrollment, she must land a starring role in the school's play at the end of the year, and also hide that she is a girl.

Kdrama Sungkyunkwan Scandal gets a Chinese remake titled In A Class of Her Own. It's not confirmed though if it's official remake. Check the plot from Dramawiki:
Xue Wenxi comes from a poor family, and disguises as a guy to make ends meet by helping to transcript and copywrite books. She meets Feng Chengjun, the son of the Prime Minister, who acknowledges her talents. Feng Chenjun secretly planned a setup so that Xue Wenxi was appointed by the Emperor, and enrolled in the Yun Shang Academy which only accepts male students. There, she befriends the rebellious and unrestrained Yu Yuexuan and the cold and aloof Lei Zexin. The four become known as the "Yun Shang Quartet" and assists the Emperor in managing the country. Through their hard work, the lives of the people began to improve. However, in the quartet's attempt to bring down General Han, a powerful man who attempts to interfere in courtly affairs, Xue Wenxi's identity as a girl and Feng Chengjun's identity as the Crown prince of the previous dynasty were exposed. In the time of chaos and unrest, Feng Chengjun assumes his position as the Crown Prince, and led the quartet in an expedition to defeat the enemies. They ultimate find victory in protecting the peace of their homeland, and fulfills their vision of serving the people.

The official site of Stand My Heroes  revealed the heroine Rei Izumi played by Misato Murai. There's a new trailer and visual too. The anime will air on October. Check out ANN for more information.
