Drama Review: The Flame's Daughter

The Flame's Daughter- 52 episodes 

Lie Ruge is the only daughter of the head of prestigious martial arts group, Flaming Hills.  But the martial world is on the precipice of conflicts after a long period of peace and Lie Ruge is right in the middle of it. Together with first love, Zhang Feng; the enigmatic man who claims to love her, Yin Xue and ever dependable friend who secretly loves her, Yu Zihan.

If there is a character relationship chart it is going to be so big and wide. Kdramas tend to be small but this one has so many characters and stories going on that the reverse harem plot they were marketing on barely existed.  It is more than a reverse harem.

I was really excited about the drama that I had to do watch it for days and weeks. It started out as very promising. I was living for the progress of my favorite men. I was optimistic halfway through the series. But it gets tedious and slow but still, I can't stop watching it in hopes it will turn around in favor of my favorite men. And as it nears its end I realized I was blindly hoping for nothing! Gaah I was duped! I was on denial blinded by my feelings.

It's easy to like the other two guys but I can't help feel Vic Zhou is miscast. He looks too old for Dilraba Dilmurat (11 years difference).  Well, his character is indeed waaay old but I am put off with dramas (and Hollywood) where the couple has an obvious age difference well with the exception of  Goblin (12 years). Also, Scarlet Heart main couple has age difference too of 11 years but it wasn't evident. 

It's obvious by now that I'm into the second and third lead syndrome again but more so on to the third lead. He is so handsome and pure! He's the only reason I kept on going. I can't seem to tell if Dilraba acting prowess is good or bad. It's like she only has one expression. All the guys are really good looking even the bad guys and I feel sad for their relationships. 

I can't help but compare this to kdramas as kdramas has taken over my Asian drama viewing habits. I'm not used to the straightforwardness unlike the scheming in kdrama. Everything is out in the open. Or so I thought but that was only from the beginning when it gets to that the latter half there are twists ahead. I hate that there are so many deaths that are so sudden that it does not give you closure. But my god, the ending lasted for five episodes which was like forever! It was like how they stretch the fight scenes on Dragonball or Ghostfighter. Also, I noticed a loophole though like Anye Yue not seeing Ru Ge before or not realizing she is uhhmm okay spoiler but that one really bugs me.

I enjoyed piecing the scenes from the opening and ending credits. It's like a checklist game. It gives away spoilers and at the same tricks you to a make-believe story in your head. Apparently, this is how they do the credits in China. I realized this should not be new as I have watched Meteor Garden but it was eons ago. I only remembered while watching Meteor Garden 2018 now. And yeah if in case you have not noticed Vic Zhou is Hua Ze Lei of Meteor Garden 2001. 

Woo hoo for my very 1st Chinese wuxia drama! This is based on the novel of the same name of Ming Xiaoxi. But I don't know if I feel accomplished that I finished all 52 episodes or did I just waste my time? The fight scenes are of course superb, the costumes and the wig game is strong (but Zhan Feng's beach waves is distracting) and so many locations (but the zoomed out view of Flaming Hills looks like a dummy set).  It reminds me of Hwarang. It was enjoyable at first but it lost its spark halfway through.

Anime Review: Kiskis! My Boyfriends are Mint Candies!

Kiskis! My Boyfriend are Mint Candies!- 4 episodes

Tang Tang meet guys who each represent a flavor of mint candies. It has a catchy, cute opening. At first there's a different feel on it which I can't pinpoint. And then I realized that they are talking in Chinese! This is my first completed Chinese animation. Well since it was way too easy to finish it. It's 5-minute ONA for 4 episodes. I think this premiered last June 4. But the first Chinese animation I watched is still currently airing (unconfirmed reverse harem), Phantom in the Twilight, which is a collaboration between Japan and China. Oh back to back Chinese reviews after The Flame's Daughter. Is China going to be booming with reverse harem now?

I'm not sure if this is anthropomorphism since the other two are part of her past or was it something made out of fantasy too. This is not the first time too that we have reverse harem used for promotion or for mints for that matter. Japan had a reverse harem campaign for chewing gum, Gum Kare. But the storyline reminds me of First 7 Kisses (which promotes Lotte Duty Free in Korea). I'm not going to dabble on it further since it's too short. 

The heroine reminds me of Shan Chai of Meteor Garden 2018 when she gets angry. And who's my favorite mint? It's Peach guy. His story is sweet and funny. And for a very feminine color it looks good on him. Nothing we haven't seen before but heck you can watch this for less than half an hour so why not? Thanks Imane Orannaise for the recommendation!

Drama Review: Good Morning Call and Good Morning Call: Campus Days

 Good Morning Call - 17 episodes

Nao Yoshikawa finds herself duped into renting an apartment together with one of the top three popular hottest guys in their school, Hisahi Uehara. They must keep this a secret to everyone -- friends, family and school. 



I find the couple very boring but they can be cute at times and the series is watchable. Nao can be irritating but she has her charms. Uehara's is Mr. Zero Excitement but I love it when he gets jealous. Things turned around, well for me anyway, when the guy I was crushing on became part of the reverse harem. It was a surprise even though you already guessed since there were hints. Overall, the series is so-so but to my amazement, I enjoyed the season 2 so much that looking back I realized how important season 1 is. It is to lay the plans for something better and I can look back to this with nostalgia. Burning question, who is the no. 3 popular guy in school? This is based on the manga by Yuke Takusuka. There's an anime OVA adaptation too featuring Uehara's birthday but it's not a reverse harem.


Good Morning Call: Campus Days - 10 episodes

Yoshikawa and Uehara are now in college. They live now as next door neighbors and goes on different colleges. What obstacles will they face now that they are not together as they used to be?

The second season had an aesthetic makeover. It looked so refreshing. The hair/makeup particularly Nao's. The interiors of their homes. And most especially the clothes! The clothes! I want Nao's wardrobe! It reminds me of pupegirl and is now part of the most fashionable series list I have in my head. 

As I mentioned the two had a vanilla relationship okay wrong choice of word but you know what  I mean. But for the first time, I feel giddy for the two. I also find Daichi cuter now. I don't know why I ignored him in the first season! Must be his hair and he looks menacing and bitter in the former. But really, the most compelling reason to watch is Natsume. I feel guilty for harboring these feelings for someone so young. Lol.

Second lead syndrome strikes again for both seasons. But I realized on both occasion when the second lead guys acted on their feelings I felt happy but at the same, I felt sad. As much as I love them especially Sugino *swoons* the couple - Nao and Yoshikawa - has grown to me. They are very convincing in portraying their characters with their pureness and their feelings for each other. Life is so unfair!! Also, all the circumstances to push the heroine towards the other guys in S1 and S2 are so not believable. Twice the whole universe plotted everything to make it happen.

I can relate to Nao's concern that the only reason they are together is that they lived together. If it could have been anyone and he'll fall in love with that person. With my husband, I think it was critical that we live in the same neighborhood and that I was his first girlfriend. We broke up and the cliche first love never dies was applicable to us. So I think it could have been anyone and he will be forever hang up on his first love. But I realized now that it wasn't true because there were previous girls he dated but just did not follow through. Destiny and luck play too but at the end of the day it's still your feelings for each other which will determine your relationship. 

I want to re-watch it just for the clothes and Natsume but my heart can't bear to relive Natsume's heartbreak. Ten episodes were not enough for me. I wished it was as long as the first season. The only reason I picked this up was from the heartbreak for pining on the second leads of The Flame's Daughter. Argh. Back to back heartbreak for me! By the way, Sugino Yosuke (Natsume) is actually in Ani ni Aisaresugite Komattemasu. He plays the brother. I need to watch the movie soon.

No, for the first time I'm not late in posting. I just don't have anything to post for upcoming reverse harem titles for this fall. :( I held off posting Bakumtasu. I'm 50% it will be bishonen anime and 50% they will announce the heroine when it gets nearer the air date just like in Idolish7 and Sengoku Night Blood. They recently released additional characters including an unnamed character simply described as a mysterious woman. She's also included in the key visual at the very far back. Do you think she's a heroine or not?

I've been on a limbo on how many pageviews it has been since Reverse Harem Garden reached a million hits and since Sitemeter closed. So I checked Google and turns out I have 2 million plus pageviews already! But Sitemeter  uses "hits" while Google uses "pageviews".Wait there's more! As per Blogger I already have now 3 million plus pageviews and that's from 2010 and we are missing 3 years here. Blogger filter bots from the pageviews, while Google do not count visits with ad blockers. (Puh-lease whitelist  Reverse Harem Garden ). So I really don't know which to follow for the milestones now. @_@ 

But anyhoo, statistics aside, this wouldn't be possible without all of you! And I want to produce more content, news, and reviews for you than the current rate I post now which is very few that I would have liked. And if you want that too, I hope you can support me on Patreon. I've updated the tiers/goals if you have already checked it out before. Let's make more reverse harem love! Thanks! :)

The protagonist, who has the unique trait of drugs having no effect on her, ends up working in the unit. She scouts personnel from investigators, idols, writers, genius high school students, top designers, butlers, underground doctors, and others to form teams of modern ikemen heroes for different missions.

Light novel 'Otome Game no Hametsu Flag shika Nai Akuyaku Reijou ni Tensei shiteshimatta…' ( I Reincarnated into an Otome Game as a Villainess With Only Destruction Flags) will be adapted into anime. More information on MAL.






The Japanese entertainment company LDH launched a multimedia project, Prince of Legend. There's a drama series that began last October 3 and a movie to be released on March 21. There will be live events and games too. The  cast are from LDH's  Generations, The Rampage and  EXILE.  

A school has a competition every 3 years in which they pick a Prince of Legend. Fourteen males students compete. “The Prince of glasses”, “The Prince of yankees”, “The Prince of hairdressing”, “The Prince of dancing”…no matter what your taste might be there’s a prince for everyone!

Aki Mochida's manga, Hajimete Koi o Shita Hi ni Yomu Hanashi (A Story To Read On The Day You've Fell In Love), will have a drama adaptation which will premiere in January. More information on ANN. Synopsis from Asianwiki:
Junko Harumi (Kyoko Fukada) was once a model student during her middle school and high school days. She failed to enter prestigious Tokyo University and her life has not gone smoothly since then. She has a hard time finding a job and having relationships with men. Now, at the age of 31, she works as a teacher at a private institute. 3 men, who vary in type, appear in front of her. Masashi Yakumo (Kento Nagayama) is smart and a cousin of Junko, Kyohei Yuri (Ryusei Yokohama) is a disorderly high school student and Kazuma Yamashita (Tomoya Nakamura) is Kyohei ’s teacher in high school.

For years, I've always thought of how should we call ourselves as reverse harem fans. I think I found the perfect stan name and it was right under our 'nose' all this time. WALLFLOWERS! I got the idea while coming up with tiers for Patreon. But months before I came up with Wallflower of the Month reward, I was in touch with Kristina who was checking with the reverse harem shows she's trying to cosplay and complete before she turns 40. It never crossed my mind that someone would cosplay all the reverse harem shows and I just think it's so cool! So I asked her if I can feature her after she has completed her reverse harem cosplay quest. By the way, she excluded reverse harem which are in OVA formats only. And now here goes to our very first Wallflower of the Month!  Check out the interview and her cosplay photos below.

Tell me something about yourself: name, age, occupation, anything

Hello my name is Kristina and I just turned 40 years old. I have a Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science and I work in Medical Education for a major healthcare system in Metro-Detroit Michigan. I like to watch anime, read, sew, and have 2 cats.

What got you into cosplaying reverse harem? When did you start and how many reverse harem themed cosplay have you done so far?

I started cosplaying in 2015. My first Reverse Harem Cosplay was Nanami from Kamisama Kiss. Since June of 2015 I have cosplayed 47 unique characters (3 of them multiple versions) from 37 Reverse Harem Anime. O.O

How do you choose your character for each reverse harem anime?

I tend to pick the character that matches my mood at the time. How sometimes I end up with the Heroine or the serious boy or my usual favorite the hentai. Sometimes they are my favorite character in the series and sometimes they are characters I feel are most suited for me to cosplay. Other times I get it completely wrong on all counts and wind up cosplaying multiple characters from the same series. XD And if all else fails I pick whichever character Hikaru Midorikawa voices. He is my favorite Seiyuu so if I can’t pick a character I cosplay his. 😉

Diabolik Lovers

Who is/are your favorite character/s that you cosplayed?

My favorite fandom is Diabolik Lovers. Kou was my first cross-play at a Convention and he was my “boy” since I myself am pretty tsundere I feel like I “get” him. I cosplayed him before the second season of the anime debuted in America so NO ONE except diafam (Diabolik Lovers Family) knew who I was and I had A LOT of fun with him. I think this is why I keep playing him. I now have 4 of his outfits. He is just a lot of fun to play. Always Idol boys!

How do you prepare/make for your cosplay outfit, accessories, makeup, hair/wig etc.?

Most of my Reverse Harem Cosplay costumes I have not made. They start from the simplest purchase version I can find then I build them up. I make the accessories, sew on lots of details, style all the wigs, and add props. It takes a lot of time to get a cosplay fully ready to wear. Even Kou who I wear often has a lot of things that go with him and his wig always needs styling. Makeup is at least an hour to put on. So some take me a few hours or a day to get ready and others take months to pull together. It just depends on how many details they need and how much I want to work on them. ❤

Who is/are the most difficult to prepare or to cosplay?

The most difficult to wear Reverse Harem Cosplay I have is Beatrix from Diabolik Lovers. She is a full ball gown and a very top heavy bun wig. Bun and ponytail wigs often give me headaches so I can only wear her a short time before needing to change. Ryuuki from Sauiunkoku Monogatari is also hard to wear. His crown was a lot of work to build and it hates the wind (we found that out at the photoshoot).

How was the journey like?

I would never have been able to do all these cosplay without the help of very key people along the way. My cosplay family supports me and I love my photographers (especially bless Christine for not only taking the photos but making sure I get dressed properly and getting me into locations I would never have been able to get to without her).

Diabolik Lovers

Tell me your most memorable cosplay experience?

In August of 2016 we had the largest North American meet-up of Diabolik Lovers ever assembled at Otakon in Baltimore Maryland. All 18 characters were represented and it was SO MUCH FUN! I have to applaud the patience of Dani (one of the primary people who convinced me to cosplay) to take 2 years in organizing the event and getting us all together for some epic shenanigans.

What questions/reaction do you get for cosplaying reverse harem characters?

I present a panel on Reverse Harem Anime’s so I am blessed to find other nerds like me who love this genre. I don’t often wear the RH Cosplays at a Convention unless we are going to do a group because alone just isn’t as much fun as being with a group all vying for that Heroine!

What are the struggles that you encountered? And how did you overcome it?

My biggest struggles are my own self-doubts. I know I am old to cosplay these characters. I have been told I am too old, fat, and ugly to cosplay. It has had me put cosplays away I will not wear again. It has also helped me want to get better. To improve my make-up, improve my sewing, and to always surround myself with people who understand cosplay for what it is. It is meant to be fun!

What are the perks or positive outcome that you got for cosplaying reverse harem characters?

I have met some of the most amazing people because of cosplaying the characters I cosplay. I have an entire family who cosplay from multiple series and it is wonderful to see them grow and discover new Reverse Harems and share them with me. I am blessed for all the friendships I have made.

What is your advice to people who want to do cosplay?

I would advise people that it is a hobby that can be stressful and frustrating but to always do it because you want to. Don’t allow other people to destroy it for you. If you want to cosplay a character and you can’t sew look in your closet see what you can put together. If you can’t afford a wig see if you can style your hair like the character. It doesn’t have to be perfect to be fun. I get lost in the details a lot and I know I need to take my own advice and have more fun with it and worry less about if my contacts are the right color or if my wig is perfectly styled. Just have fun. ❤

What are your future projects or plans?

I want to cosplay Zach from Angels of Death so I have his materials waiting for sewing. I mostly want to get good enough at sewing that I can do more projects for other people. I am sewing Violet Evergarden for a friend at the moment and I am learning a ton sewing for someone else. It really is a lot different than how I sew for myself. 

Fushigi Yugi

How did you discover reverse harem?

Fushigi Yuugi was my first Reverse Harem anime. I was in high school (1996) and I watched it on my computer with dial up internet. I then read the manga and was hooked on the concept of a Heroine surrounded by her harem. Since then I have watched and read as many as I can (I also play most Otome’s that are translated into English).

What are your favorite reverse harem titles (animes, mangas, otome games, dramas , books?)

Favorite Fandom: Diabolik Lovers
Favorite Anime: Hakuouki
Favorite Manga: Alice in the Country of…..series
Favorite Games/Otomes: Dandelion and Psychedelica of the Black Butterfly
Favorite Drama: Boys over Flowers (Live action)
Favorite Books: I find in the west most Reverse Harems are found in books and there are some really great book series for lovers of the genre usually including some form of supernatural like vampires, demons, etc I reference Laurell K. Hamilton, Sherrilyn Kenyon, Kim Harrison, Charlaine Harris, JR Ward….many many more. 

What are your favorite non-reverse harem titles (animes, mangas, games, dramas , books?)

My favorite non-Reverse harem titles:
Animes: Kakuriyo no Yadomeshi, Still World is Beautiful, and Owari no Seraph
Mangas: Water Dragon Bride and Demon Prince of Momichi House
Games: Fable (1,2,3), Cathedral, and my favorite card game is Euchre
Dramas: The Tudors, Game of Thrones, and Star Trek
Books: The Hobbit, The Great Gatsby, and Waterlily (by Ella Deloria)

News Round Up: new Fruits Basket anime, Meiji Tokyo Renka PV and more!

Fruits Basket will get a new anime and will cover the whole manga. The anime covered six volumes only while the manga ran for 23 volumes. It will have a new cast and staff and will air on 2019. More information on ANN. Check out the interview of manga, Natuski Takaya on ANN.
